Why One-Way Links?
Lets look at it from the search engine companies' side of
things. Their goal is to return relevant search results. When you search for, lets say...
widgets, Google searches for sites that meet specific criteria, and one of the
primary pieces of criteria they are scanning for is sites that have links pointing in from other sites that contain the words or phrase searched for.
Lets say you perform a search for "widget factories." Google's
objective is to return sites to you that are relevant to widget factories. If one of the
websites Google runs across has hundreds of incoming links from other sites that include the words
widgets and factories in the link, from the search engine's perspective, that's a lot of "votes" for that site. It works much like word of mouth advertising. If other site's are linking to yours, it must be because they are saying, "Check out this great site!"
The problem is, people caught on to this method
quickly, and started swapping links like there was no tomorrow - and they were right - there is no tomorrow or future in link swapping.
Quality search engines want to produce accurate and relevant results. Swapping links does not mean the site giving you the link thinks you're a great site and they are not recommending it to their visitors. It just means they are scratching your back because you scratched theirs, and so the search engines are being forced to change the way the criteria for how they display results is determined.
If a link from another site points to yours, and you point back to it, the link does not help you. You need to work on getting links that point into your site without you giving a link back to the same site.
But how do you get people to help you if you are not giving back anything in return? There are
several one way linking programs out there. Most cost money, and you have to be
really careful because it is usually a subscription based payment and if you
ever decide to leave the program, you lose all your links. This would be
catastrophic to your site as far as where you are placed within the search
engines. Losing a bunch of incoming links in a short amount of time is worse
than if you never had them at all. It is almost like a vote against you. Losing
one or two here or there is normal, but a significant amount in a short period
of time will set off all the bells, whistles, buzzers, and flashing red lights
over at Google's headquarters! Well... maybe that's exaggerating a teensy bit, but you get
the point.
We've created this program because it just makes sense for people to help each other; people need each other.
We want to see good people do good, and we want to do good ourselves. You'll never lose your links in our program, and it will never cost you a dime. If you stop participating then you just stop receiving new links, but you don't get the ones you already have taken away.
There are other things you should consider when building your "Links" pages. DO NOT name the page LINKS! Don't even use the word "links" in the name of the page. The links on a page named links will most likely not be given credit from larger search engines. It is obviously just a bunch of "links" and another way to manipulate the search engines.
It does not only discredit the links on the page, it can also harm your site in
the near future as well. Name your pages something like, "Resources" or "Commercial Pages," just not links.
Make sure your "Commercial Pages" are linked to your homepage or at least by one level. Your site-map should be directly linked to your homepage.
At the very least, make sure the page is on your site-map and not floating out there in space. Also, link back to your other pages from your "Commercial Pages."
This helps make your site stronger and better optimized for the search engines.
It is always best to receive one way links from sites that are similar to yours. If you sell widgets, a link from another site about widgets will be more powerful towards helping you place high in the search engines than if your link was placed on a site about kittens. Sometimes it can be difficult to get links from similar sites, especially when most of the similar sites might be your competition. If you include a text description along with your link then that helps to show that the page your link is on is somewhat similar or relevant to your site. Again, look at it from the search engines perspective, if somebody was in the widget business, and suggested a site about widgets, then that would be more credible than somebody who
had a site about their kitty recommending your widget. So, make sure to include text with your link. You should request other webmasters display your link in the following manner
(we always do):
Place your
targeted keywords or keyword phrase in the link & in the text
